Man bags 2 years over N.6m property theft

An Akure Chief Magistrate Court has ordered the immediate imprisonment of an 18-year-old boy for allegedly conspiring with one other to steal property worth N600,000 .

   The suspect, Olawale Jimoh, was said to have conspired with one other still at large on October 17, 2019, at about 3:00 am, along Ondo road,  Akure and stole one Yamaha generator 2.8 valued at N200 000, two injector cylinders valued at N200 000, two kick starter valued at N200 000, one alternator and some other parts yet to be ascertained, total  value at N600,000, properties of one Augustine Oraiwhgo.

   According to the prosecution, the offence committed was contrary to section 383 and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

   The defendant , who is facing two counts charge bothering on conspiracy and stealing, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

   According to him, he said he did not steal the properties, but only helped his friend who was the other suspect.

   Meanwhile, the prosecuting officer, Sergeant Augustine Omhenimhen, said the defendant and his accomplice still at large broke into the shop of the complainant and stole some items.

 He said the complaint was directed to a scrap shop at Isolo area in Akure, where the complainant saw the stolen items., while the suspect was handed over to him and later to the police.

   Speaking further, he said the other suspect escaped through the help of a woman who aided his escape.

   The prosecutor prayed the court to convict the defendant and also punish him.

   Magistrate O. R Yakubu, in her ruling, found the defendant guilty and thereby sentenced him to 1 year imprisonment on count one and 1 year imprisonment on count two which he said must run concurrently.

He also ordered that the recovered items should be returned to the rightful owner.
