Man bags 7 yrs over burglary

Justice Bode Adegbehingbe, of an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced one Segun Odiase, to seven years imprisonment for burglary
The trial judge, while pronouncing the judgement found Odiase guilty of all the charges preferred against him and sentenced him accordingly.
The judge handed him seven years on the count of burglary while he bagged four years each for stealing and breaking into building.
He said the sentences are to run concurrently.
The convict was arraigned in November, 2019, charged with three counts of burglary, stealing and breaking into building.
He was said to have burgled the shop of one Tope Akinsanmi at Oke-Aro, Akure, Ondo State capital and stole one LG Plasma TV valued at N28, 000, Home Theatre Sound System valued at N15, 000:, clipper valued at N3, 500:.
The convict was also arraigned in March, 2020 for breaking into the building of one D.A Akingba at 2B Olorunsogo street, Gaga, Oke-Aro, Akure with intent to commit felony.
But he pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, while the prosecution led by Bunmi Koyenikan called five witnesses
One of the witnesses, Tope Akinsanmi , whose shop was burgled, confirmed that his properties were carted away.
He admitted that the exhibits tendered before the court are his properties.
According to another witness, Olabanji Asaolu, a team of vigilantes comprising of the landlords including himself had apprehended the defendant alongside his partner-in-crime with the recovered exhibits.
Asaolu testified that the apprehended men could not produce the receipts of the valuables found in their possession while his colleague took to his heels.
He said the group had to call the police to arrest Odiase.
The owner of the second building burgled, one Dickson Akingba also testified in the case that he was notified that the complex had been broken into, and after a search, the defendant was heard making phone call from the ceiling of one of the shops.
Akingba claimed to have witnessed the defendant the ceiling of his building, the arrest of the defendant and his being handed over to the police. He testified that the defendant gained access into the building through the ceiling, which he damaged
The police witness, inspector Olusegun Ajibade, attached to the ‘B’ Divisional Police Headquarters, Akure said that he investigated the case against the defendant.
He testified that the defendant admitted burgling Akinsanmi’s shop, after which he led him and others to the shop he burgled, which belonged to PW 5.
He continued that the defendant also led them to the property which he had earlier broken into and where he was eventually arrested.
Ajibade tendered some of the properties recovered from the convict as exhibits which are: LG Plasma television, set of LG theatre sound system, Clipper (GTS), scissors,
remote controls, red pull-over, two Techno phones.
In his defence, the defendant had denied being involved in the case. He claimed he was arrested while he went to buy beans cake one morning.
He also denied the statement he made with the police.
