Man charged to court for reckless driving

A 55-year-old truck driver, Segun Olawale has been dragged before an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Oke-Eda, over alleged reckless driving.

Olawale was brought before the presiding Magistrate, Mrs Victoria Bob-Manuel, on two-counts charge of dangerous and reckless driving.

The accused person was said to have committed the offence on May 18, 2019 at about 05:00pm, beside OSDPC, Ijapo Estate Akure.

According to the prosecution, the accused, being the driver in charge of Mack truck Tipper with number plate XA 838 DCG, allegedly drove the truck on the road at a speed in a manner which was dangerous to public and caused accident.

He was said to have hit a TVS motorcycle with number plate WEN 531 WQ, ridden by one Aliu Ibrahim , who reportedly sustained several injuries on his left leg and left hand, while the two other passengers on the motorcycle sustained fractions and bruises on their bodies.

The alleged offence was said to be contrary to and punishable under section 18 of the Road Traffic Act Cap 136 Vol. 3 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

The accused pleaded not guilty to charge when it was read to him.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Suleiman Abdulateef, prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file properly and gather his witnesses before the court on the next adjourned day.

Lawyer representing the defendant, Mr Isaac Adubazi, did not oppose the adjournment date requested by the prosecutor. But he urged the court to grant the accused bail in most liberal term saying, ”it is a bailable offence.”

The Magistrate, Mrs Victoria Bob-Manuel, granted the accused person bail in sum of N200,000 with one credible surety in like sum, whom she said must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

She adjourned the case till June 24, 2019 for mention.
