A middle-aged man on Tuesday escaped death by the whisker, when the driver of a tipper rammed into him at Showboy Plaza, in Alagbaka, Akure metropolis.

The victim, who lives in the area, was hit after the brake of the truck failed, while descending from a sloppy road.

Eyewitnesses told The Hope Metro that the driver lost control, and the truck rammed into the man, dragging him until it was stopped by a roadside tree.

They said the victim was standing by the roadside, waiting to take a motorcycle, when the truck swerved and hit him.

The truck driver was on his way to offload  sand when the accident happened.

The impact uprooted the tree and trapped the man beneath the vehicle.

Passersby quickly rushed to the scene, pulling the victim out from under the truck after it came to an abrupt halt.

The truck driver fled the scene for fear of being lynched when he realized the man was trapped.

While the driver escaped unscathed, the victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed medical facility.

Efforts to get  police to speak was unsuccessful, as officers were seen leaving the scene.

The truck’s number plate had also been removed by the time our correspondent arrived the scene.
