Man docked for allegedly killing officer while in custody

By Ayodele Popoola

The Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), known as ‘Amotekun’ Corps, has arraigned a middle-aged man, Godwin Oyesanmi, for allegedly killing an officer, Stephen Ajibike.

Oyesanmi, whose address was not disclosed, was brought to court on a murder charge.

Prosecuting counsel P.O. Nwafor informed the court that the alleged offence occurred on April 4, 2025, at 11:53pm in Igbotako, located in the Ese-Odo Local Government area of Ondo State.

Nwafor claimed that while in lawful detention, Oyesanmi caused the death of Officer Ajibike, who was on duty at the time.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant brutally attacked the deceased at night, leaving him gravely injured.

“The deceased, in pain, made a distress call for help, stating he had been attacked by the suspect while in custody. He was found bleeding and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following day,” Nwafor said.

The charge against Oyesanmi contravenes Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.

Nwafor urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In court, Oyesanmi denied the allegations, asserting that there were two individuals in custody on the day of the incident. He claimed that the crime was committed by the second suspect, who fled immediately after the attack.

The defendant’s lawyer, O. Oladapo, requested an adjournment to prepare a response to the prosecution’s application.

Consequently, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni adjourned the case until May 7 for the defendant’s reply and ordered that Oyesanmi be remanded in Amotekun custody.
