Man docked for escaping from custody

The police have arraigned a 42-year-old unemployed man, Oluwafemi Alo before an Akure Magistrates’ Court for breaking out of a police cell after being detained for allegedly theft 

Alo, whose address was given is charged with two counts of stealing and escape from lawful custody.

The prosecutor, Abdulateef Suleiman, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 20, 2024 around 8:00 am at a building beside Signature  Alagbaka Akure.

According to Suleiman, the defendant was alleged to have stolen four packs barb wires valued at N180,000 and a printing machine valued at N250,000 , total valued at N430,000, belonging to one Olarenwaju Adeleye.

The prosecutor further stated that the defendant at the police station in Oba-Ile, escaped from lawful custody to avoid facing trial in the case of stealing against him.

“ The defendant was detained in the police station after he was arrested for allegedly stealing some items which were found in his possession.

“the defendant, while in detention pretended to be pressed by nature, an officer was asked to lead him to the toilet but when the officer turned to get him water to use, he jumped out and fled, before he was later apprehended,” the prosecutor said

The offence, according to the prosecutor contravened to Sections 135(a) ,390(9) of the Criminal Law of Ondo  State, 2006.

Meanwhile, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge brought against him.

The defence Counsel, Lawrence Nnajiofor prayed the court to admit his client to bail in the most liberal term.

Magistrate A. Akinboboye refused the defendant’s bail and adjourned the case till October 16 for hearing and his bail consideration.

The defendant was remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre, Akure till the adjournment date.
