Man docked for threat to life

For unlawfully threatening a man with cutlass, a 27-year-old man, Kingsley Effiong, has been dragged before the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo town.
The accused, Effiong was said to have willfully and unlawfully threatened one Bayonle Olatuja with a cutlass on December 13, 2018 at about 1:00pm at Bethlehem street, Oke-Odunwo Ondo, in the Ondo Magisterial District.
The police brought the accused before the court on Monday for an act likely to cause a breach of the peace, by using cutlass to scare other tenants away from the house.
Effiong is now facing the two- count charge bothering on threat to life and breach of the peace contrary to and punishable under Sections 86 and 249 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The police prosecutor, Mr Benard Olagbayi, who told the court that he would be calling four witnesses to testify in the case, applied for a date to enable him study the case file.
Lawyer for the accused, Barrister Israel Ikuemenisan applied for the bail of the defendant in most liberal terms.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs Bolatito Ajibade granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
She said the surety must be residents within the jurisdiction, while they must show evidence of payment of tax and copy of valid means of identification.
She adjourned the case till January 22, 2019 for trial.
