Man docked over N1m theft

A serial thief,  Omojola Oyetola, has been dragged before an Ondo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing  fresh cocoa beans and other perishable items  worth  N1.055 million.

The  35-year-old defendant was brought  before the  court  by the police for allegedly stealing the property of five  persons.

The police  prosecutor, Mr Gbenga Akinsulire  said the defendant stole the  items belonging to Akande Olayinka, Moses Akande, Akande Julius, Akinsulire Busayo and Jide Akinrodoye.

Oyetola was alleged to have committed the offence at about 6:00am on June 23, 2019  at Ayila camp via Ayeyemi, Ondo in the Ondo Magisterial District.

The charge read in part, “That you, Oyetola Omojola on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did steal some iron sheets valued at N30,000, Kolanuts  worth  N100,000, some fresh cocoa beans valued N100,000 and some tubers of yams valued  at N70,000 total valued at N300,000, property of one Moses Akande and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of  Nigeria 2006.

“That you Oyetola Omojola on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did steal some fresh cocoa beans  worth  N50,000, some Kolanuts valued  at N15,000 and four bunches of plantain valued at N10,000, total valued at N75,000, property of one Julius  Akande and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the five –count read to him.

The prosecutor,  informed  the court of the  presence  of the  six prosecution witnesses  in court.  But  he  applied for a short adjournment to study  the case file.

In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs Ijeh Christianah, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000.00 with two sureties in like sum.

The  sureties,  she  added, must  be resident within the jurisdiction,  which  should be  confirmed by  the court’s  orderly and reported back to court.

She noted that evidence of payment of tax of year 2019, one of the sureties must be a landed property owner and the other surety must be a  civil servant, level 8 officer.

She therefore adjourned the case till July 4, 2019 for hearing.
