The lifeless body of a man, simply identified as Mr Kehinde Ijebu, was on Wednesday found floating on the Oyile River in Ibokun, headquarters of Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State.
The deceased was alleged to have drowned himself before he was sighted floating in the river.
Sources said the man had been declared missing by his family and relatives since Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
The family was reported to have searched for him in many places, including the homes of neighbours, but to no avail, hence their suspicion that he might have committed suicide.
One Olawale Famuyatan, who hails from the same community, told newsmen that the man had been behaving in a depressed manner for weeks before his disappearance.
He added that the moment his absence was noticed, some neighbours believed he had taken his own life.
His words: “His whereabouts were unknown from Tuesday evening till the following day. His relatives and family were worried all through the night. But some neighbours concluded he had disappeared as he usually did, until his dead body was spotted floating in the river on Wednesday by passersby, who alerted members of the community.”
Also, an anonymous source disclosed that the deceased had been showing symptoms of dementia before he allegedly took his own life. He added that the body was buried along with his belongings by the riverside.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident.
He said the police suspected it was a case of suicide, as there were no marks of violence on the deceased’s body at the time it was evacuated from the river.
He added that the body had been released to the family for burial, after they insisted that they did not want an autopsy carried out.
His words: “The incident happened. There were no marks of violence on his body. The family approached us, saying they wanted to bury him. We suggested an autopsy, which they objected to. They said they just wanted to bury him. I can’t say how or where he was buried. Investigation is still ongoing into the matter.”
