A 28-year-old man, Solomon Daniel, has been arraigned in Akure Magistrates’ Court for murder.

The defendant allegedly committed the offence on July 28, 2024, at about 8:00 p.m. on Tukana Street, Oshinle Quarters, Akure.

The defendant, whose address was not provided in court , was docked on a charge of murder.

Police prosecutor, Taiwo Oniyere informed the court that the defendant unlawfully killed one Joy Emmanuel, 21, by beating her with his fists, leading to her death.

The charge reads: “That you, Solomon Daniel, on July 28, 2024, at about 8:00 p.m. on Tukana Street, Oshinle Quarters, Akure, in the Akure Magisterial District, did unlawfully beat one Joy Emmanuel, aged 21, with your fists, resulting in her death on August 8, 2024.”

The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 316 and is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State, Nigeria, 2006.

Oniyere submitted a remand application and urged the Magistrate to remand the defendant in a correctional centre, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The defence counsel, Adelanke Akinrata, requested an adjournment to enable the defendant to respond to the prosecution’s application through a counter-affidavit.

Magistrate Kolawole Aro adjourned the case until September 6, 2024, for the counter-affidavit.
