Man jailed for stealing N800,000 electric cable

An Akure  Magistrates’ Court has  sentenced a 35-year old man, Sunday Omotayo, to 12 months imprisonment for  the theft of  an electric cable wire worth N800,000.

The Magistrate, T.I Ayodele-James, in her ruling convicted and sentenced Omotayo without an option of fine, after he had pleaded guilty to the charge.

“In sentencing the defendant, I will take into consideration the plea of the allocutors, made on behalf of the defendant to the effect that the defendant is a first offender and that he is sober and remorseful now.

“I will also take into consideration the fact that the defendant has not wasted the precious time of the court by simply admitting his guilt.

“In view of all these factors, the defendant is hereby sentenced to 12 calendar months in a correctional centre without an option of fine and it will start from when he was arrested.”

Earlier, the Prosecuting Counsel, P.O Nwafor had told the court that Omotayo committed the offence on April 7, 2024 around 12:20a.m. at Onyearugbulem area, Akure.

Nwafor said that the defendant stole an armored electric cable wire valued at N800,000, the property of one Ayobami Orisunmibare

She added that the offence contravened Sections 383 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo , 2006.

The prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.
