Man lands in court for destroying N1.4m trees

A 40-year-old man, Taiwo Rufus has been remanded in prison custody by an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly destroying 38 economic trees worth N1.4million.
The accused person committed the offence on March 27, 2019 between 10 a.m and 6 p.m. at Agidi village along Modakeke-Ife.
The prosecutor, Inspector, Glory Ona told the court that the accused person conspired with others still at large to commit felony with stealing.
He added that the accused person forcibly entered into the farmland of one Semiu Odelola with intent to commit felony.
Ona stated further that the defendant unlawfully and maliciously damaged cocoa trees valued at N950,000 and plantain trees valued at N470,000.
The offence contravened the provisions of sections 81, 383, 390, 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The accused person pleaded not guilty to the three-count offence leveled against him.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Abednego Enejo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal term.
He promised that his client would not jump bail, but would produce reliable sureties.
Magistrate Olukunle Owolawi, ordered that the accused person be remanded in Ile-Ife prison till Monday, April 29, 2019.
