For assaulting a police officer, a 30-year-old man, Oladele Waheed has been remanded at Okitipupa Correctional Centre by an Odigbo Chief Magistrates’ Court . The police arraigned the defendant, before Chief Magistrate D. O Ogunfuyi on a count charge of assault. According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the offence on August 7,2023 at lroju Street in Ore, Ondo State. The prosecutor, Inspector James Usifo told the court that the accused assaulted one Inspector Adegoke Adetunji attached to Area Command Headquarters Ore. According to Usifo, the defendant who tried to escape from arrest for the offence of stealing, pushed the officer off from a motorcycle and caused him injury on his head The offence contravenes Section 355 of the Criminal, Code Cap. 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006. When the charge was read, the defendant pleaded not guilty . Usifo therefore sought for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and prepare his witnesses for trial. The defence counsel, Mr V. A Akinfe did not oppose application made by the prosecutor, but prayed the court to grant the accused person bail on most liberal terms The prosecutor who opposed the bail application, told the court that the defendant, if released would abuse the privilege. Chief Magistrate D. O Ogunfuyi granted the prayer of the prosecutor and ordered the remand of the accused person in the Okitipupa Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till September 22, 2023 for mention.
