A 23-year-old farmer, Temitope Oduleye, has been remanded in correctional centre by an Akure Magistrates’ Court, for attempting to machete his elder brother to death over farmland.
The defendant, who resides at Igbara-Oke, was brought to court by the Police on three counts bothering on misdemeanor and attempted murder.
The prosecutor, Inspector Babatunde Bami, told the court that the incident occurred at about 9.00pm, on January 11, 2023 at Odotun farm in Ero, Ifedore Local Government area.
Bami said the defendant unlawfully entered into the cocoa farm which belongs to his brother, one Chief Toyebi Oduleye.
It was learnt that the farm was Oduleye’s share out of their father’s properties shared evenly among all the children.
He said the defendant also threatened the life of the complainant by chasing him with cutlass in the farm in an attempt to kill him.
The prosecutor added that the defendant harvested some palm kernel in the said farm
The Hope Metro gathered that the defendant, was once remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Centre after he inflicted a deep cut on the complainant’s head in 2015, when he broke into his house to request his own share out of their father’s farmland.
He, therefore, urged the court to remand the defendant at the correctional centre for the safety of the defendant.
The offence according to the charge, contravene Sections 37, 86, 249 (D), Vol. 1 of the Criminal Code of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offences leveled against him, while his counsel, l.A Aluko, prayed the court to grant him bail in most liberal terms.
He noted that the case is a family matter that could be resolved amicably between the parties with the intervention of the elders in the family.
The magistrate, Temitope Aphonso, in his ruling granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum.
Aphonso said due to the arrogance and non remorseful attitude of the defendant, he should be remanded at the Olokuta correctional centre till the next adjourned date.
He adjourned the matter till January 30 for hearing.
