An Akure Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a 24-year old security guard, Godwin Sargwak, in police custody over allegations of theft.
Sargwak, whose residential address was not provided, was arraigned by the Ondo State Police command on two counts bordering on theft.
The police prosecutor, Augustine Omhenimhen, informed the court that the offences were committed in February 2025 at the residence of the defendant’s employer.
Omhenimhen alleged that Sargwak stole an Android phone valued at N395,000 and two wristwatches worth N600,000, belonging to Mrs Demilade Fadowole, the wife of his employer.
He said the offences contravened Sections 383 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor told the court that he had two witnesses and requested time to review the case file.
The defence counsel, Femi Adetoye, while not opposing the prosecution’s request, prayed the court to grant his client bail on lenient terms, assuring that he would not jump bail and would provide credible sureties.
In his ruling, Magistrate O.T. Lebi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.
The court directed that the sureties must reside within its jurisdiction, provide an affidavit of means, submit two passport photographs, and present tax clearance certificates.
However, Sargwak was unable to meet the bail conditions and was subsequently remanded in police custody.
The case was adjourned till April 8, 2025, for further hearing.
