A man, Timothy Balogun, has approached the Igoba Customary Court in Akure, seeking to dissolve his five-year marriage to his wife, Tosin Balogun, citing her significant weight gain as the reason for the breakdown of their union.
In his testimony before the court, Mr. Balogun stated that his wife’s physical appearance had changed drastically due to excessive weight gain following childbirth. He alleged that the development had affected his emotional connection with her, adding that she made no visible effort to manage her weight despite his repeated advice and concern.
According to him, the situation had become unbearable, as he faced ridicule from his friends and colleagues. He further alleged that his wife’s eating habits were excessive, claiming, “My wife can finish two loaves of bread within minutes and still complain of hunger shortly after.”
Mrs. Balogun, in her response, countered her husband’s claims, describing them as harsh and unjust. She accused him of infidelity and insisted that her weight gain was a natural consequence of childbirth
“That is not an excuse,” she told the court. “Before we got married, I was already a little chubby. Every woman gains weight after giving birth. He just wants to cover up the fact that he has a side chick.”
When asked by the presiding judge, Mrs. Ireti Sunday, if she was open to reconciliation, Mrs. Balogun declined, stating that she deserved a partner who respected and valued her.
Following the submissions of both parties, the court granted the divorce, with both husband and wife agreeing to part ways and move on with their lives.
