In a bid to prevent  road blockage on market days in the state, Ondo state government has warned motorists visiting markets to make use of designated motorparks or risk their vehicles being towed.

The directive was given after a meeting between the officials of the Ministry of Transport and the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state. Also present at the meeting were officials of the Vehicle Inspection Services, Sunshine Traffic Control Corps and Directors at the Ministry of Transports.

Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had on Monday, during his weekly state briefing, directed officials of the two organisations to collaborate and devise measures to ensure free flow of automobiles on the roads, especially at market areas across the state.

The meeting, which was the first of it’s kind, was held to devise measures to implement the directive of the Governor. It was held yesterday at the Conference Hall of Engineering Building, Ministry of Works, Akure.

Speaking with The Hope, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport, Barrister Tobi Ogunleye, who chaired the meeting, berated the manner at which motorists visiting the markets flout traffic rules and regulations and causing unnecessary gridlocks on the road.

He therefore warned that motorists should use the Isinkan park, Sammy park and Nepa park as those who failed to adhere to the directive will have their vehicles towed.

“We discovered that the fundamental cause of this recent traffic jam at the various specific market places: Arakale, Oja Oba, especially in Akure here has been the closure of some of these parks. Because of this pandemic, we stop using them. Some of the parks have been converted to temporary markets.

Barrister Ogunleye noted that a committee had been set up to access the Olukayode park, adding that enforcement agents would be there to ensure free flow of traffic.

At the meeting, which lasted for over two hours, it was also raised that interstate vehicles and parks are still operational against the directive of the state government to cease operation and it was agreed that vehicles flouting the order will be impounded.

In his own remark, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo state, Mr Rotimi Adeleye noted that the country is at war with an unseen enemy and the corps was ready to do everything within its capacity to ensure safety on the roads across the state

He advised that physical and social distancing measures recommended by health officials are put in place to keep people safe.
