But for divine intervention, what could have been a calamitous disaster was averted in Akungba Akoko at the weekend when scores of market women and students, cheated death by the whiskers as they escaped being crushed to death in an accident that occurred in the town on Saturday.
According to an eye witness, the accident which occurred at about 3:15 pm happened when the driver of a truck which was carrying a damaged industrial rock crusher lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure.
The Hope learnt that this happened at the gate of the Adekunle Ajasin University in the town but the driver struggled to control the situation as he managed to maneuver the situation.
However he was not that lucky as he tried to dodge the traders at the first market in the town when the industrial rock crusher it was carrying fell off on the road and in the process hit some vehicles and motorcycles before falling in the drainage opposite the late Pa Adebayo Adefarati family house beside the market.
Speaking to our reporter, a victim of the accident, Olasemoyi, a Vucaniser, said he was in his kiosk when one of his children called his attention to the rampaging truck.
Olasemoyin said before he could straighten up he just heard the roof of his shed falling on him.
He however said that he thanked God that he and his children came out unhurt.
A mechanic, who called himself Audu Yakubu, told The Hope that he was on top of the rock crusher which they have gone to convey from a location in Ikare Akoko but said the truck lost control due to break failure.
When The Hope visited the scene of the accident, lots of onlookers were there accessing the situation.
The rock crusher was still at the middle of the road while the situation caused a traffic in the town as it took several hours for the men of the FRSC to put the traffic under control while vehicles travelling to Ikare have to use adjoining street road to continue their journey.
No fewer than 10 vehicles and over 20 motorcycles were damaged in the accident while scores of passengers and traders at the market escaped being crushed to death
Meanwhile all the affected vehicles have been moved to the Divisional Police Station, Akungba Akoko when The Hope visited the scene of the accident.
