Organized labour leaders in Ondo State have confirmed that they were the ones who unanimously demanded for the extension of tenure of the state Head of Service, Mr Dare Aragbaiye.

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC),Ondo State Council, Comrade Sunday Adeleye, made the revelation in Akure, the Ondo state capital, while leading other union leaders to meet the state governor at  the  Government House Grounds, to mark the 2020 Workers’ Day.

He explained that the extension of tenure of Mr. Dare Aragbaiye as the Head of Service was not the making of governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, but the wishes of the workers of Ondo state because of the unique and uncommon way he has been addressing all labour/workers issues since he became the state’s Head of Service.

“For the first time, we demanded something from Mr Governor and for the first time we were so much interested in who would head the civil service of Ondo state. As workers in Ondo state we believe if the head is not good there is nothing the followers can do, and as far as we are concerned Mr Governor is not the head of the civil service but one of us is the head of the civil service.

“We came to you (Mr Governor) and said, with what the Head of Service is doing we want you to elongate his tenure, and you told us then that you had no choice if only we were willing.

“I want to state here publicly that the extension of Mr. Dare Aragbaiye as the  Head of Service, was not the making of the governor of Ondo State, but the wishes of the workers of Ondo state”, the NLC chairman asserted.

While appreciating the governor for not politicising the state civil service, Adeleye and his TUC counterpart, Mrs Hellen Odofin  also commended Akeredolu for prioritising the welfare of workers in the state through regular payment of salaries and pension, promotion of deserving workers, payment of the N30, 000 new minimum wage among several others

They thanked  the governor for improving the IGR of the state since his administration came on board, promising to continue to partner with government in the interest of the people and the state.

They congratulated workers in the state for witnessing the day even though no ceremony to mark this year’s celebration due to Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world.

Receiving the labour leaders, governor Akeredolu appreciated them for being responsible, reliable and effective union leaders, stressing that he decided to grant the request of the labour leaders to extend the tenure of the HoS because Aragbaiye has consistently shown he is responsible.

He thanked them for showing understanding and support for his government since it came on board, adding that his government has enjoyed cordial relationship with the labour leaders in the state with a promise to continue to prioritise Workers’ welfare despite the dwindling federal allocation.
