Mechanic jailed three years for possessing firearm

An Iwaro-Oka Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State has sentenced a 22-year old mechanic, Akinsola Olaoluwa, to three years in prison, for illegal possession of a locally made pistol.

Olaoluwa, said to be an ex-convict, was reportedly apprehended by a vigilante member in the early hour of February 10, 2025, at Medoline area, Akungba Akoko.

He was later handed over to the police, who arraigned him before Magistrate B.A. Ikusika.

According to the charge sheet, Olaoluwa was found with a locally made pistol, an offence contrary to Section 428 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

He was also accused of stealing an Infinix Smart 7 phone worth N58,000, belonging to one Alabi Might Oluwabojowumi, and possessing several other items—including an Itel phone, two android chargers, a power bank, a necklace, two pairs of palm slippers, and a pair of jean shorts—without being able to give a satisfactory account.

The prosecution stated that the offences contravened Sections 383, 390(9) and 430 of the Criminal Code.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Ikusika sentenced Olaoluwa, to three years imprisonment.
