The pioneer Visitor and former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, along with others, completed the first-semester examination in the Health Law and Policy Master’s Degree programme at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Ondo State, Nigeria.
The programme, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, is hosted by the Institute of Advanced Clinical Sciences Education under the leadership of Prof. Leroy Edozien, a doctor, lawyer, and pan-Nigerian patriot.
According to the Assistant Registrar, Public Relations Unit, in a press release, Mr. Temitope Oluwatayo, it is worth noting that a member of the UNIMED Governing Council and Ondo State’s former commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Yemi Mahmud, is also in the Health Law and Policy Master’s Class.
The statement added that the programme is a relatively new but swiftly growing field of law. It covers issues such as consent, confidentiality, clinical negligence, mental health, public health, legal and ethical issues in reproduction, end-of-life issues, and research governance.
“Through the UNIMED Health Law and Policy programme, the university has introduced the teaching of Medical Law into the undergraduate medical curriculum for the first time in the history of medical education in Nigeria.
“At the postgraduate level, the University has instituted a Master’s degree programme in Health Law and Policy, with the hope to offer opportunities for doctoral degrees in the next academic year.
“The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, is proudly Nigeria’s first specialized medical and health sciences tertiary institution. Established by the Dr. Olusegun Mimiko-led administration in 2014, UNIMED has continued to blaze the trail in introducing medical programmes to reduce the burden of diseases by providing integrated education and research of exceptional quality in all health-related sciences,” the statement stated.
