Mission schools noted for academic excellence

By Kehinde Oluwatayo

Schools managed by missions were known with passion for academic excellence and discipline.
This submission was made by an educationist, Dr Emmanuel Moyinjesu of the Federal College of Agric, Akure in an interview with The Hope.
Moyinjesu while commenting on quality of education in the country charged parents and guardians to instill discipline and fear of God in their wards that they can be successful in their careers.
Moyinjesu said most students nowadays are not disciplined because their parents are not doing enough to instill discipline in them.
He said students were more disciplined when schools were being managed by missions because almost all the students were in the boarding house.
The teacher who said admission into secondary schools in those days was based purely on merit added that school managers place premium on academic excellence.
According to him, the missionaries ensured that the students attended classes when they should, read when they should, go to the chapel when they should among others.
He added that most people who passed through the missionaries are men and women of integrity and are successful in their chosen careers.
He called on stakeholders to do everything possible to make sure the standard of education in Nigeria improves.
While saying that much is not done in the area of infrastructural development in schools, he called on all and sundry to contribute to the development of education in Nigeria.
He called on well to do people in the country to support the education of Nigerian students through scholarship so that they too can become somebody in life.
He called on parents to play their role since most children today are no longer in the boarding system so that they can grow up to become successful in their careers.
