Nigerians have expressed mixed feelings as Nigeria celebrated Democracy Day, to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999.

While some Nigerians believe there was nothing to celebrate due to economic hardship, others held divergent opinions.

Miss Motunrayo Esther stated she could not see anything worth celebrating because the country’s future was uncertain based on her current situation.

Mr. Oluwatoyosi Ebenezer echoed his sentiment, arguing there was no need for the celebration as nothing had changed since the return to democratic rule.

He suggested this year’s celebration should have been a time for remorse, pointing out that smaller African countries are faring better than Nigeria.

Mr. Olubunmi Olushina opined that, given the current economic climate, democracy is not worth celebrating.

He highlighted issues like insecurity and unemployment, emphasizing that people are merely working for survival.

He urged the government to focus on tangible improvements rather than leaving everything to divine intervention.

Mr. Awe dismissed the celebration as nonsensical.

He argued that the benefits of democracy are not evident in the lives of ordinary citizens and criticized the current government for not listening to the populace.

In contrast, Mr. Isaac Akinola said Nigeria’s democracy is worth celebrating, noting the legacy of Mr. Moshood Abiola, a key figure in the country’s democratic history. He argued that democracy deserves recognition for surviving 24 years without military interruption.

Dr. Toyin Jimoh acknowledged that while celebrating democracy is inherently positive, Nigeria still struggles with the rule of law. He called for more sub

Mr. Malvin Miya and Mr. Akoshile Ayodeji supported the celebration, stating that transitioning from military to democratic rule is an achievement.

They noted that many countries practicing democracy have seen progress and expressed hope that Nigeria will eventually do the same.
