Modernise Nigeria’s agricultural sector – Don

From Fasusi Martins, Okitipupa
As Nigeria moves towards diversification to enhance its economy, a university don, Prof.  Oluyemisi Akinyemiju has advocated  modern  agricultural practices as a way to guarantee food security for the nation.

Akinyemiju stated this during an  interview  with The Hope in Okitipupa.

He pointed out that increased investment in agriculture by government at all levels will guarantee food security,  a major contributor to job creation  and arrest the problem of food insufficiency as well as   helping to improve the foreign exchange value of the country.

Akinyemiju, a Professor of Agriculture and Extension at the  Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife,  decried the situation where Nigeria farmers still cultivate with cutlasses and hoes saying the development   is one of the factors mitigating against food sufficiency.

In his words: “The fact that we don’t have Nigeria farmers, using modern technology, has  made farming less productive.”

” Farmers are not making profits on their farms, therefore, you have people running away from the farm, the young people are not going to the farm because the profit on the farm is not enough and encouraging. “

Oluyemisi added that lack of agricultural extension staff to monitor and assist the farmers as been done in the defunct western region is  another big challenge.

” You will recall that during the western region, we have agricultural extension staff, who were given motorcycles and money to go to farms, we are always in touch with the farmers to guide them on modern agricultural practices, all these are no more ” he said.
