A commercial motorcyclist identified as Mukaila Okedowo, was crushed to death on Monday by a granite-laden truck after it lost control in Ikirun, the headquarters of Ifelodun local government area of Osun state.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred at about 1:35pm, around Oja-Oba market, infront of the Akinrun palace, when the truck was coming from Obaagun and heading to Osogbo.
An eyewitness, Wahab Taofeeq,, narrated that the truck rammed into motorcyclists, who parked infront of the Akinrun’s palace, saying one out of the Okada riders died on the spot while others sustained various degrees of injuries.
Taofeeq who attributed the incident to dangerous driving said similar incident happened twice within this year as the granite-laden truck had crushed anorher motorcyclist in the same circumstance.
According to him, “About two months ago, a granite-laden truck lost control and crushed my brother-in-law to death. As I am talking to you, my sister who happened to be the wife of the deceased is still mourning her late husband.
“I think the authority concerned should help us find solution to this incessant killings of innocent people under the guise of brake failure. The drivers of these granite trucks don’t always put the lives of other road users into consideration, and they need to be cautioned,”he said.
Giving the situation report on the incident, the Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Osun State command, Kehinde Adeleke, said that the remains of the deceased have been evacuated and deposited at the mortuary.
Adeleke said, “Today April 3, 2023 around 1335hrs, a truck loaded with granite had a brake failure at Oja-oba in Ikirun claimed one life (Mr Mukaila Okedowo) an Okada rider.
“Also many people sustained various degrees of injuries while many cars were affected.
“Operatives of NSCDC, NPF and FRSC were deployed to take victims to the nearby hospital for prompt treatment and also to maintain law and order. “
