An Akure Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 26-year-old Okada rider, Taye Suliaman, to six months imprisonment, for breaking the windscreen of a 4matic Benz 300, property of one Damilola Adeyeri while he also injured his left eye.

The police charged Suliaman with assault and criminal damage to property

The prosecutor, Insp. Adesegun Adeseye, told the court that the convict committed the offence on March 4, 2022 at about 3.00pm at Arakale road in Akure.

He added that the defendant, who initially drove in a reckless manner broke the side mirror of the said car and when he was challenged, he used fist blow to hit the driver and one occupant of the car, Temitayo Adeyanju, and in the process the driver sustained a serious injury on his left eye.

Adeseye told the court that the defendant went further to damage the windshield of the said car worth N150,000.

He said the offence contravene the provisions of Section 351 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1 Law of Ondo State, 2016.

He, therefore, applied that the defendant should pay for the damaged vehicle.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charges explained that it was an accident and when the driver and his friend were harassing him, he fought with them and broke the car windscreen.

Presiding Magistrate, Temitayo Owolabi sentenced the defendant to three months imprisonment for each count based on the convict’s confession and evidence of the broken windscreen of the car.

Owolabi, however, gave the convict an option of N50,000 and to pay the owner of the damaged car a compensation of windscreen.
