Motorcyclist remanded for allegedly beating man to death over stolen phone

A 42-year old man, Wasiu Ibrahim, has been arraigned before an Akure Chief Magistrate Court, for allegedly beating a 31-year old, man, Joesph Odunayo, to death over alleged mobile phone theft.
The police charged Ibrahim, whose address was not provided, with two counts charge of conspiracy and murder.
The Prosecution Counsel, Abdulateef Suleiman, told the court that Ibrahim and others at large committed the offence on December 31, 2024 at about 5:30pm at Continental Road, Akure.
Suleiman alleged that the defendant and his accomplices at large caused the death of one 31-year old Joseph Odunayo, by beating him with a fist blow after the deceased was alleged of stealing a mobile phone.
The charge reads: “That you, Wasiu Ibrahim ‘m’ and others at large on December 31, 2024, at about 5:30 pm at Continental Road, Akure, in the Akure Magisterial District, did conspire to kill one Joseph Odunayo, aged 31, after beating him with a fist blow, which made her sustained bruises all over her body.”
The offences, according to the charge, are punishable under Sections 324, 316(1)of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol.ll, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant at the correctional centre pending advice from the state’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Magistrate, F.A. Akinboboye did not take the plea of the defendant for want of jurisdiction.
Akinboboye adjourned the case till January 17, 2025, for hearing of the remand application.
She subsequently ordered the remand of the defendant at the State Criminal Investigating Department (SCID), Akure, pending the ruling.
