An Akure Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of a 30-year-old motorcyclist, Michael Olorunfemi, at Olokuta correctional centre over the alleged rape of his wife’s 17-year-old sister (name withheld).
Olorunfemi, a father of four, was arraigned before the court on a one-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse.
The prosecutor, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, said the defendant committed the offence sometime in August 2024, at 10 pm, in the Onigaari area of Irese Road, Akure.
Oniyere stated that the defendant unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the 17-year-old girl (name withheld).
The offence, according to the charge, contravened Sections 357 and 358 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.
The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional centre pending advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
In his statement to the police, which was read in court, the defendant confessed to committing the crime. He said, “I had sexual intercourse with the victim in the bush.
“The victim approached me to take her to her boyfriend’s house, and on our way, I stopped near a bush and raped her. I promised to give her money, which I did not. She then reported me to her mother, which led to my arrest,” the defendant said.
Magistrate Kolawole Aro ordered that the defendant be remanded in Olokuta Correctional Centre, and that the case file be transferred to the DPP for advice.
The court adjourned the case till October 31, 2024 for review .
