My music reflects culture, enhances education – Taye Turaya

By Oluwadamilola Akinduro

Renowned Fuji musician, Solomon Taiwo Ebenezer, popularly known as Taye Turaya has said that music reflects the culture of society through its natural rhythm and classical influences.

He stated that people, especially children, are naturally drawn to learn through repetition, sound, and rhythm, making music a powerful educational tool.

This belief aligns with Taye Turaya’s journey, as he reflects on his U.S. tour and the cultural impact of his music.

In an interview with The Hope, Turaya shared how Olantech Global Promotions initiated his U.S. tour. “Anthony Olaoye reached out, saying the U.S. needed my music,” he revealed.

Although logistical issues, including a delayed visa, disrupted the schedule, Turaya maximised the opportunity by performing at church events and private gatherings. His music, rooted in traditional Nigerian rhythms, captivated diverse audiences.

Turaya explained that music, much like a child’s language development, helps people broaden their understanding of the world.

“Music helps us memorise words, understand grammar, and build vocabulary,” he said, drawing a parallel between language learning and the cultural richness found in songs.

He added that his music brings joy and transcends cultural boundaries, creating unity by reflecting societal values and traditions passed down through generations.

Listening to music from other cultures, Turaya, who holds degrees in Business Administration from Rufus Giwa Polytechnic and Management Studies from Adekunle Ajasin University, believes is key to broadening one’s worldview.

Despite scheduling and weather challenges, Turaya connected with U.S. audiences and performed at several shows.

He also received two awards in New Jersey and expressed his ambition to return with his full band.
