N24m Visa scam lands man in custody

A 50 – year – old man, Olayiwola Toafik has been remanded at the police custody for allegedly defrauding one Olayemi Godwin the sum of N24,750,000,000 under the pretense of obtaining America Visa for his family members.
The defendant was brought to the court by the police on a two count charge of fraudulently obtaining money under false pretense, and fraudulent Conversion
The charge sheet reads: “That you Olayiwola Toafik between June 2018 to December 2019 at Orita Obele Estate, Akure in Akure Magisterial District collected the stated amount from Olayemi Godwin to procure Visa for his wife and two children to study abroad by false pretenses knowing same to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap37 volume 1Laws of Ondo State 2006.
“That you Olayiwola Toafik at the same date, time and place fraudulently converted the sum of (N24, 750,000) money belonging to Olayemi Godwin to your personal use and thereby committed offence contrary to 383 and punishable under 390(9)of the Criminal Code Cap37 volume 1 Laws of Ondo State 2006.
When the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Adesegue told the court that he would be calling witnesses to testify on the matter.
He pleaded with the court for short adjournment to enable him study the case file, assemble his witnesses and bring them to court.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olumide Ogunleye urged the court to grant bail to his client saying the offences are bailable.
He told the court that his client is ready to provide a reliable surety and present himself to court any day and would not jump bail.
The Magistrate, Olanipekun Mayomi ordered the accused to be remanded in police custody till September 9,2020 for hearing.
