N5m fraud lands man in court

A 53-year-old man, Akpatamu Smith, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court over an alleged fraud.
The accused person committed the offence between 2017 and 2020, at Okitipupa in the Ondo State Magisterial District.
The prosecutor, Inspector Adeoye Adesegun, told the court that the accused person fraudulently obtained five million naira from one Richard Oluwadara Igbekele.
He added that the accused person under pretense obtained the said amount from the victim, Oluwadara with a promise to help him secure job from NDDC, knowing same to be false.
The prosecutor said that after collecting the said amount, the accused person refused to give his victim employment letter and fraudulently converted the money to personal use.
The offence committed contravened Sections 383, 390(1), punishable under section 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State Nigeria, 2006.
The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing preferred against him.
The defence counsel, Chief D F Akinbo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms, promising that the accused person would not violate the bail conditions, if granted.
The Magistrate Mayomi Olanipekun, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate added that the sureties must swear to an affidavit and must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
He said that the sureties must also submit three of their recent passport photographs to the court.
The case was adjourned till March 26 2021, for hearing.
