NAFDAC busts syndicate selling expired condoms

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has uncovered a syndicate involved in repackaging expired condoms originally donated by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, for sale to unsuspecting Nigerians.

The agency disclosed that the expired condoms, which were initially meant for free distribution, had their expiry dates manipulated and rebranded as “Kiss Condom,” with the expiration date fraudulently extended from 2022 to 2027.

NAFDAC made the startling revelation in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle stressing the dangers posed by the circulation of expired medical products.

Beyond the adulterated condoms, the agency also intercepted unregistered narcotics, counterfeit GlaxoSmithKline, GSK, medicines, and improperly stored vaccines during a recent raid at the notorious Idumota open drug market in Lagos State.

Shockingly, some of the illicit drugs were discovered hidden in toilets, a clear indication of the recklessness with which such dangerous substances are handled.

NAFDAC further disclosed that it seized banned drugs, including Analgin, Oxytocin meant for maternal health, and vaccines that require cold chain storage, alongside other donated medical products stored under unsafe conditions.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the crackdown on counterfeit and substandard medical products, warning that such criminal activities pose grave health risks to unsuspecting Nigerians.
