The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared a nationwide shutdown for September 15.

The protest is a reaction to the recent fuel price increase and to express discontent with NNPC Director General Mele Kyari’s leadership.

The student group calls for an immediate reversal of the fuel price hike, citing the hardship it imposes on citizens. They also call for Kyari’s removal as NNPC DG.

In a notice signed by NANS Senate President Okunomo Henry Adewumi, the organisation vows to occupy major cities across Nigeria on the designated date. They assure the public that the protests will be peaceful and lawful.

“We write to notify you of an impending massive shutdown of all major cities in Nigeria, effective 15th September 2024, in protest of the recent hike in fuel prices and the gross incompetence of the NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari,” the notice states.

“We shall not be silenced, and we shall not be intimidated. We shall rise in unison to demand a better deal for Nigerian students and the masses.”
