Natasha/Akpabio Scandal: Osun CDHR demands unbiased investigation

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo
The Osun State Chapter of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has called for an impartial and transparent investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a press statement issued by its Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Olowu, the CDHR said it has been following the development with keen interest and emphasised that while the allegations remain unproven, they must be treated with the seriousness they deserve.
“We cannot ignore the grave nature of the claims or their wider implications,” Olowu stated. “As a human rights organisation committed to justice, equity, and the protection of human dignity, we are deeply disturbed by these allegations. They reflect the enduring culture of gender-based discrimination and harassment faced by women in Nigeria, especially those in public office.”
The CDHR expressed concern that despite constitutional guarantees of equality and justice, many Nigerian women continue to face harassment, intimidation, and marginalisation. The organisation stressed that the current case highlights the systemic obstacles that hinder women’s full participation in governance and public life.
“In any society that upholds the rule of law and justice, the Senate President would have voluntarily stepped aside to allow for an independent and transparent investigation. He cannot be a judge in his own case,” the statement read.
The group further condemned what it described as a troubling trend among some political leaders who seem more focused on personal gratification than on fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities. It warned that such behaviour weakens governance and undermines national development.
In light of these concerns, the CDHR demanded the an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the allegations against Senator Akpabio, with a firm assurance that justice will be pursued without fear or favour.
It also demanded that Senator Akpabio step aside as Senate President while the investigation is ongoing, to preserve the integrity of the National Assembly.
It explained that political leaders refocus their attention on addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, rather than engaging in conduct that discredits public office.
Solidarity with all women who face harassment, discrimination, and violence, reaffirming CDHR’s commitment to defending their rights and holding public officials accountable.
“The CDHR remains steadfast in its mission to promote justice, defend human rights, and ensure that those in power are held accountable to the people they serve,” the statement concluded. “We will continue to monitor this matter closely and advocate for justice at all levels.”the statement said
