Nations Cup Qualifier: Owanikin expects victory over Leone Stars

By Femi Atolagbe

As Super Eagles today tackle Sierra Leone in the first leg of double header of Nations Cup Qualifiers, Ondo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Dotun Owanikin has said he expects nothing short of victory from the Eagles at the Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Kick off for the Nigeria Vs Seirra Leone encounter is 5:00pm
A victory for Eagles will qualify them for the next AFCON tournament should they defeat the Leone Stars in both legs .
The Eagles are currently topping Group L with six points from their opening two games ,three ahead of Benin Republic.
In a chat with Sporting Hope, Owanikin said he expects nothing less from them with the arrays of Stars in the camp, coincidentally all the players are foreign based.
He said if their performances is put into consideration, all the invited players are at their best in their respective clubs, so I see them triumphing over their opponent.
The Commissioner said he was not troubled with the involvement of the Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa who has not been involved in any competitive football in the last few weeks.
He noted that Musa’s wealth of experience is needed at this period to serve as a motivator for the young players.
“In my opinion, Musa is not a spent player in the team despite the fact that he hasn’t been involved in competitive football for long”, he said.
Probing further on the blackout of local players in the Super Eagles, he said “it’s a matter of time , I believe that when our league take shape and we have a sports policy that could make our players stay for a while before jetting out of the country for a greener pasture over seas.”
He adds; “With good sports policy and improvement in the organisation of our leagues, I’m optimistic that we will have our local players in the National teams.”
