When the shafts of your hair break, resulting in split ends and shorter hair strands, it is known as hair breakage. It usually occurs due to a dry scalp and damaged hair.

A little care and a little effort are all you need to prevent hair breakage and keep the hair tangle-free.

Hair Dresser, Mrs Tolani Adeyemo, who is based in Akure, in a chat with Natural Health said that lack of moisture blow drying the hair everytime can cause hair breakage.

Adeyemo, whose shop is at Oke Jebu, noted that nobody wants her hair to be brittled and damaged. “The hair is called the crowning glory because it plays an important role in enhancing people’s look”.

According to her, coconut oil is a natural moisturizer that helps prevent the hair from breaking, that the nutrients  in the oil imparts antifungal properties to it, which protects the hair from fungal infections like dandruff. These properties help in preventing hair breakage.

The hair dresser advocated that individual should massage coconut oil gently into the scalp and spread it all over the hair and cover the hair with a shower cap and leave it on for 2-3 hours or overnight at least once a week.

Adeyemo affirmed that egg white is a rich source of proteins and help in keeping the hair healthy, soft, and breakage-free. They exhibit significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can protect the hair and scalp from inflammation and damage.

She explained that individuals should mix the egg whites, olive oil, milk, and lemon juice in a bowl and apply the mixture to the scalp and hair then leave it on for 30 minutes and wash with a mild cleanser.

She noted that aloe vera gel is quite popular for the skin and hair benefits. This is mainly due to its moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties, which help in keeping the scalp dandruff-free and prevent hair breakage.

According to her, the individual should mix equal portions of aloe vera gel and almond oil and apply the mixture all over the scalp and hair to leave it on for 20-30 minutes and then wash it off with some water. People can also apply aloe vera gel directly to condition the hair.

She encouraged individuals to also use garlic, saying it is a rich source of sulfur, which acts as a building block for the hair.  Additionally, garlic has antifungal and antioxidant properties that can protect the scalp and hair from breakage and fungal infections.

The mother of two added that carrot oil is derived from the seeds of the carrot. The oil is a rich source of vitamins especially A and E that are quite essential for healthy hair and also have healing properties that can help to deal with a dry scalp and breakage-prone hair.

Adeyemo hinted that avocado with an egg yolk is also good to stop hair breakage while advising the  individual to blend the pulp of an avocado, egg yolk and butter to form a smooth paste and apply the paste to damp hair, from the roots to the tips. Massage the scalp gently with the mixture for a few minutes and leave it on for at least 20 minutes then rinse the hair shampoo and condition. Repeat two to three times every month.

She posited that people should heat grape seed oil and massage the hair and scalp gently with it and cover the head with a shower cap and let the oil work on it overnight or for one to two hours.

She further explained that onions are rich source of sulfur too. Onions not only help prevent hair fall and breakage but also make the hair stronger and healthier.

The hair dresser said that the antifungal properties of onions help in preventing dry scalp and dandruff.

Adeyemo noted that a mixture of onion juice with coconut oil helps to stop breakage when applied on the scalp and left it on for 20-30 minutes before washing it off.

She advised individuals to trim the tip of their hair on a regular basis and also avoid blow drying and ironing the hair every day.

She charged individuals not to comb their hair when it is wet and also not change the colour of their hair often or look for a natural alternative if you plan to do so.

She advised that people should massage their hair and scalp with a good oil every time by using a hydrating conditioner to keep the hair well moisturised.
