The National Association of University Students (NAUS) Osun State Campus Monitoring Committee has strongly condemned the recent assault and harassment of the Osun State University Students’ Union President, Lady Comrade Adigun Amidat, in the Ifetedo community.
In a statement issued by NAUS Chairman, Comrade Olayinka Popoola, the union expressed outrage over the attack on Comrade Amidat, who also serves as the Director of Gender and Campus Intervention for NAUS.
Popoola revealed that Amidat was assaulted by seven men at the Osun State University Ifetedo campus on January 26, 2025.
Reports indicate that five suspected hoodlums entered the female hostel on the campus around 9 PM on Sunday, carrying Indian hemp and other unspecified hard drugs. Their presence caused widespread panic among students, particularly after they were overheard discussing a money ritual renewal.
He said that concerned students, who were at the hostel, immediately alerted the Student Union President, who, despite the distance, rushed to the scene.
“Upon her arrival, the attackers launched a brutal assault on her. She was severely beaten until a large number of students mobilised to intervene, forcing the attackers to flee in a Toyota Camry with a car dealer’s plate number,” Popoola said.
Reports further suggest that the attackers have connections to Oba Akinola Oyetade Akinrera, the Olubosin of Ifetedo, and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ifetedo, Nuga Rasak. The inaction of both parties has raised suspicions that they are obstructing justice.
The union expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of intimidation, assault, and harassment of students at institutions in Osun State.
“The union insists that the safety and well-being of students must be a top priority and condemns a situation where university students live in fear on their own campuses,” Popoola stated.
NAUS has made the following demands to the Osun State Government:
Unseat Oba Akinola Oyetade Akinrera within seven working days for failing to maintain harmony and ensure student safety.
Rename the school hostel in Ifetedo Campus, currently named after Oba Akinola, to reflect a commitment to student protection.
Transfer DPO Nuga Rasak from Ifetedo to restore confidence in law enforcement and ensure student security.
Investigate and prosecute the perpetrators of the attack to serve as a deterrent against future occurrences.
NAUS has warned that failure to meet these demands within the stipulated timeframe will leave the union and all university students in Osun State with no choice but to take aluta-driven actions to seek justice for the attack on the Osun State University Students’ Union President.
The union has also called on the Inspector General of Police, the Office of the SSA to the President on Student Engagement, and the Office of the SSA on Student Matters to Governor Adeleke to act swiftly in ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for students in Ifetedo and across Osun State.
Additionally, NAUS urged all traditional rulers in Osun State to take responsibility for ensuring peace between students and local communities, rather than harbouring or condoning acts of intimidation.
The statement concluded by reaffirming NAUS’ commitment to protecting students and ensuring a safe academic environment across Osun State.
