NAWOJ, FIDA, NSCDC intensify efforts to protect abused orphan

By Tola Gbadamosi

In a united drive to safeguard the rights and welfare of vulnerable children, the Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has teamed up with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Child Protection Unit of the Ondo State Government.

Their recent efforts included a follow-up visit to assess the condition of Evelyn Omotayo, a 13-year-old orphan who was rescued from an abusive environment.

The team, led by representatives of the state agencies, visited the residence of Omotayo family in Akure South Local Government Area, following the case of Evelyn Omotayo, a 13-year old orphan who was subjected to abuse.

Speaking during the visit, Barrister Bolanle Olafumiloye, Chairperson of FIDA Nigeria, Ondo State branch, emphasised the commitment of all stakeholders to protecting children in the state.

According to her, “we are here with our task force, including NAWOJ, it’s State Chairperson, Comrade Tola Gbadamosi, and officers from the Civil Defence and juvenile home.

“Our purpose is to follow up on the case reported to us and ensure that the child is being properly cared for.

“We are pleased to see Evelyn and confirm that efforts are being made to provide her a safe and nurturing environment.

“We have also counselled the family on how to properly care for her. This visit highlights the collaboration between institutions dedicated to safeguarding children in Ondo State.”

A step brother of the child, Mr Omotayo Olukayode Stephen, expressed gratitude for the intervention, saying, “we appreciate the visit by NAWOJ, FIDA, and other officers.

The follow-up shows the seriousness of their work. As a family, we are committed to cooperating with these organisations to ensure Evelyn’s upbringing.

“Though she has been a stubborn child, we believe this collaborative effort will help reshape her future positively. We are already seeing changes, and we are ready to support her fully.”

The Hope had earlier reported Evelyn’s ordeal which began under the care of her elder brother, 70-year old Timothy Omotayo, and his son, Tayo Omotayo, a 24-year old businessman.

Reports revealed that Tayo frequently beat Evelyn with wires over minor issues, leaving her body covered with scars.

The abuse came to light when Evelyn arrived at school with a swollen face.

Concerned teachers alerted Ondo NAWOJ, who swiftly intervened.

Investigations revealed a pattern of frequent beatings and neglect, prompting the rescue of the child from her abusive environment.

According to the Hope Metro, Evelyn had lost both parents and had been living with her elder brother and other children in the household.

Despite being under her brother’s care, she was subjected to repeated physical abuse, with little regard for her wellbeing.

The intervention by NAWOJ led to the involvement of the NSCDC’s Child Care Unit.

According to Chief Superintendent Caroline Ogunmola-Ayodele of the NSCDC Gender Unit explained, “Our investigation revealed that the child was being severely beaten by her nephew and his siblings and the bruises and scars on her body confirmed this abuse.”

The NSCDC summoned Tayo Omotayo and his father, who admitted to the mistreatment.

They were made to sign an undertaking, pledging to treat Evelyn with love and care. Ogunmola-Ayodele added.

“We warned them that any further reports of abuse would result in stricter action. They were also advised to use love as a corrective tool.”

The family apologised to Evelyn, and assurances were given to NAWOJ, FIDA, and the NSCDC that her welfare would be prioritised moving forward.

With continued monitoring by these organisations, Evelyn’s path to recovery and a safer future is now underway, reflecting a strong commitment to child protection in Ondo State.
