NEMA sensitises Ekiti residents on flooding

Ekiti State residents have been warned against erecting structures and dumping of refuse indiscriminately along waterways in flood prone areas.

The National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA gave the warning during a road show awareness campaign in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency and other agencies in Ado-Ekiti.

The road walk which took off from Oja Oba Central Market through Bisi Market/Okeyinmi to popular Fayose Market was embarked on by teams from the National and State Emergency Management Agencies, National orientation Agency, Nigeria Fire Services.

The awareness was aimed at enlightening residents on the prediction of heavy rainfall and flooding across the country by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

The teams, led by the Operational Manager of NEMA, Ondo and Ekiti States, Mr Olanrewaju Akadiri, said early warning of flood risk is important, noting that people should ensure proper land use to minimize overgrazing, erosion and deforestation.

Also speaking, the Director, Relief and Rehabilitation, Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency, Mrs Kemisola Laka echoed that Ekiti State’s residents should take some precautionary measures and ensure  safety of their lives and properties.

“Your safety is your business, Don’t leave everything to government. Do not build on flood prone areas, head for higher ground and stay away from flooded areas”.
