New AIG Zone 17 assumes duty, declares war on crime in Ondo, Ekiti

By Tola Gbadamosi

The newly appointed Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 17, Adjani Muzbar Omolabi, has assured residents of Ondo and Ekiti states of a renewed crackdown on criminal activities.

He made this declaration during an exclusive interview with Weekend Hope, emphasising his commitment to ensuring peace and security across the region.

AIG Omolabi, who is no stranger to the terrain, recalled his previous tenure in Ondo State as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), where he played a key role in reducing crime.

“Now that I am back, you should expect a significant crackdown on criminal activities. I have developed a robust security strategy, which will be fully implemented to ensure the safety and security of Zone 17.

“The people of Akure and Ondo State can rest assured that they will sleep peacefully. That is my promise,” he stated.

The AIG also reaffirmed his active approach to policing, stressing that he is not an armchair officer but one who believes in proactive service.

“The police are servants of the people. We are ready to serve and protect, ensuring that both the youth and business owners, including shop owners and traders, feel secure.

“By the grace of the Almighty, when there is security in the state, economic growth will follow. We are committed to creating a safe and conducive environment for all residents,” he said.

Responding to concerns about the rise in insecurity, especially in rural areas, AIG Omolabi disclosed that he had met with the Commissioners of Police for Ondo and Ekiti states to discuss strategic responses.

“On the 2nd of this month, I met with the CPs for both states under my jurisdiction.

“We discussed strategies to curb the rising insecurity. Several security measures have been approved, though I cannot disclose all details publicly.

“However, be assured that for every surge in criminal activity, we will respond decisively to restore order.”

He also noted that enhanced supervision of police personnel and rigorous training would be key priorities under his leadership.

“We will prioritise training and retraining programmes, both locally and internationally, to enhance professionalism and capacity development.

“The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has also introduced various training initiatives focusing on contemporary policing and technology-driven crime prevention.

“These measures will bridge the gap between reactive and proactive policing.”

AIG Omolabi stressed the importance of community engagement in crime prevention, advocating for a stronger relationship between the police and the public.

“Since my arrival, many people have visited my office, and they can testify to our open-door policy.

“The public should not see the police as adversaries. We live within the same communities and share common goals. The difference lies in how we engage with each other.

“If you support and collaborate with the police, crime will not thrive in your environment,” he stated.

He reiterated the commitment of the IGP to community policing, ensuring that citizens actively participate in maintaining security.

“The police and the public are not adversaries; we are partners in creating a safer society.

“My office is always open to everyone, and we encourage the public to provide useful information and intelligence.”

“He has made significant provisions to ensure that officers are well-equipped and motivated.

“When law enforcement personnel feel supported, they perform their duties efficiently and effectively,” he said.
