The new year is a time to think about the improvement you can make in your life. Very often, people treat the new year as an opportunity for a fresh slate to correct past mistakes. People make yearly resolution hoping for a change in behaviour, usually with the goal of improving relationship, health, general well-being and so on.

Although the new year is not the only time one should set goals but with the motivation of new year driving you to succeed, now is the time to set some goals and stick to them. While you maybe worried about your resolutions not lasting, having a clear vision will always deliver more important and realistic goals.

As schools went on vacation for Christmas and the new year celebration, I begin to ponder on many resolutions I have seen people make in the previous years and the countless ones in this new year 2020.

So, I spoke with some randomly selected people at Oja Oba in Akure about their new year resolutions and how they had been able to achieve the previous ones.

Mr Amimi Oluwafemi said his new year resolution was to quit smoking, saying that it has been very difficult for him to do so but with commitment and ability to push harder when there are setbacks, he would be able to quit.

On his 2019 resolutions, he said he was able to achieve them because his two children were graduates and he bought two cars.

Mr Ezekiel Ogidiolu, who said his 2020 resolution was to save more money in order to improve his life in the long run, said he was not able to achieve his 2019 resolutions because the year was a bitter year for him.

Mrs Chika Precious said her own 2020 resolution was to pray to God to give her children wisdom, knowledge and understand more and for her first child to gain admission into the university.

She said she was only able to achieve little of her 2019 resolutions. When asked to expantiate further, she simply smiled and said: “Hmmmmm we thank God”.

Miss Florence Onyeka said her own 2020 resolution was to improve her relationship with others so as to be more connected, happier and better.

She however disclosed that she wasn’t able to achieve her 2019 resolutions.

Across social media platforms, one could see many of these resolutions but what is observed is that resolutions are usually made with no plans and efforts to achieve them.

Many people treat resolutions as wishes and prayer points, with no SMART plans to achieve them.

Having a new year is one of the few opportunities to really look at yourself and ask yourself :

Where do you wish to be?

Where are you now?

How do you get to achieve your vision?

From these questions, you could see your resolution and your current situation but the last question is what many people skip after the first two. The third question deals with making proper plans to ensure you achieve your goals and stick to the plans.

Before you continue with your ” NEW YEAR, NEW ME” mantra, there is need to have a change of operations in the new year if need be. The first thing to do is to put your new year resolution into paper where you get to read them everyday.

Afterwards, draw a to-do list that you can break into days, weeks and months until the year runs out. Never forget to seek help and consult good people around you: nobody achieves any vision all alone.

Hey! I won’t forget to mention that there will be some Turbulence. There will be reasons to give up but you have to be resolute, if at all you want to achieve any meaningful thing in the new year. Giving up on your goal is worse than not trying at all.

So, what are your resolutions for 2020 – Stable relationship, good job, improved business, better relationship with God? Whatever it is, you can achieve it if you have good plans and you keep to them.
