The Catholic Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Most Reverend, Jude Ayodeji Arogundade yesterday described the increase of petroleum and electricity prices as being insensitive to the plights of the masses, saying all sectors of the economy are heading towards collapse.
Arogundade declared that Nigeria needs a hero to be able to turn things around so that the lost glory will be restored.
He spoke with journalists shortly after the holy mass to mark his 30th priestly anniversary held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral, Akure.
He said the present increment of petroleum products and electricity tariff showed that the country is failing in all sectors and it needs a hero to be able to turn things around.
His words: “Nigeria is a collapsing nation whether anybody likes it or not. The country is in total mess and only a hero would be able to take us where we should be.
“Our government is hiding under the subsidy of the oil sector to increase the sufferings of the citizenry. Everybody is using payment of oil subsidy to increase fuel and further worsen the suffering of the people,” he said.
The bishop who celebrated his anniversary with his classmate, Very Reverend (Dr) Jerome Abimbola Ayelari said despite some turbulent times in their priestly journey, God has been faithful.
Earlier, Very Reverend father Anthony Famayegun, the Rector of Sacred Heart Minor Seminary, Akure while delivering his homily to mark the occasion described the celebrants as very humble, gifted and good Ambassadors of Christ.
The homilist who said the anniversary coincided with the Nativity of our Blessed virgin Mary called on parents to take the education of their girl- child very important, saying Mary the mother of Jesus played a significant role in creation of mankind.
The mother to the Bishop, Mrs Veronica Arogundade who spoke with our reporter thanked God for her son and prayed to God to continue to lead him aright especially in shepherding the flock God has entrusted into his care.
Very Reverend (Dr) Jerome Abimbola Ayelari, said the journey has not been easy, but thanked all who came to rejoice with them.
He said he was indeed happy as his 30th priestly anniversary coincided with the birthday of our Blessed Virgin Mary and urged all to always pray and seek intercession of Mary at all times.
Present at the occasion were governorship aspirant of All progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Chief Olusegun Abraham, Laity Council President of Ondo Diocese, Professor Helen Ogunsuyi, former Head of Service in the state, Mr Toyin Akinkotu, a businessman, Mr Bayo Fatusi, over 75 Priests from Ekiti and Ondo Dioceses, Knights of St John International, Knights of St Mulumba among other dignitaries.
