The National Leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, yesterday said Nigeria as a country cannot develop unless the leaders change their attitude and stop being selfish.

The nonagenarian spoke exclusively with The Hope at his residence in Akure, the Ondo state capital, on the occasion of his 94th birthday anniversary. The elder statesman clocked 94 on Monday.

He said he felt happy and very well at 94, saying “I look forward to the next birthday.”

Speaking on the development of the country, Fasoranti explained that successive leaders have only been concerned about their interest, rather than fighting for the collective good of all to ensure a better Nigeria

He advised government at all levels to plan very well for the future generation.

According to him, the country can only move forward if the leaders change their attitude and avoid being self-centered.

“Our leaders have impoverished us and the country through their parochial interest.

“Our people are just selfish, looking for money for themselves. And there is no hope for the masses. Unless we change our mindset and prepare our minds to fight for the country.

“I dream of a better Nigeria, hardworking people and not selfish people. I dream of a better country in the future,” he stressed.

On COVID-19 pandemic, Fasoranti who described the virus as a mysterious one, also prayed God to take it away in the country and the world at large.

He was also quick to call on all Nigerians to comply with all precautionary measures including wearing of nose masks, maintenance of physical and social distancing, personal hygiene amongst others, to stay safe and alive.

While speaking on the influx of Almajiris into the South-West states, the nonagenarian condemned their leaders for doing nothing to give them education and take proper care of their people, especially the young ones.

“They don’t go to school, their leaders don’t take care of them, they don’t provide jobs for them. So there is a serious problem, unless something urgent is done to address the situation, the precarious situation will continue”, Fasoranti concluded.
