The Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army (TRADOC NA), in collaboration with the 31 Artillery Brigade, yesterday hosted the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) at the Minna Military Cantonment.
The vibrant ceremony, held at the Cantonment Parade Ground, marked the grand conclusion of the Army’s training and operational activities for the year.
It brought together military personnel, their families, members of other security agencies, and notable guests from across Niger State.
Addressing attendees, the Special Guest of Honour, Maj.-Gen. Kevin Aligbe, Commander of TRADOC NA, described WASA as a unique opportunity for relaxation, camaraderie, and cultural exchange within the military community.
Aligbe said the annual event symbolises unity and togetherness, providing officers and soldiers the chance to celebrate with their families and friends after a demanding year.
“This occasion allows us to reflect on our achievements, bond with loved ones, and reinforce the values that define our service to the nation,” he said.
Aligbe commended the 31 Artillery Brigade and TRADOC NA for their successful training activities in 2024, despite the challenging security landscape in Niger State.
He also paid tribute to fallen colleagues, including the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, CFR, acknowledging their sacrifices in service to the nation.
“May their labour not be in vain, and may their souls rest in perfect peace,” he said.
The Commander further praised the synergy between the Army and other security agencies in Niger State, describing their collaboration as critical to operational success.
He urged stakeholders to sustain their commitment to strategic partnerships, which he said are pivotal to national security and development.
The Commander of the 31 Artillery Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Hamidu Bobbo, highlighted WASA as a platform to celebrate cultural diversity while fostering peaceful coexistence among troops and their families.
Highlights of the event included cultural displays, musical performances, a tug-of-war competition, and dance routines by participating formations.
Awards of excellence were presented to 11 soldiers from TRADOC NA, the 31 Artillery Brigade, and the 313 Artillery Regiment in recognition of their professionalism and dedication.
Among the awardees were Warrant Officer Ishaku Abdullahi, Signal Man Patrick Michael, and Gunner Inah Christian, who were recognised as the best firers during the quarterly range classification.
The celebration concluded with the ceremonial beating of the retreat and the lighting of a bonfire, symbolising the Army’s resolve to face the coming year with renewed determination.
