Nigerian doctors earn less than cleaners abroad – Afe Babalola

Victor Akinkuolie – Ado Ekiti

Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has decried the poor remuneration of Nigerian medical professionals, stating that cleaners abroad earn more than doctors in the country.

Speaking on Tuesday at the seventh induction ceremony of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) graduates of ABUAD by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Babalola called for increased investment in the health sector.

He emphasized that quality healthcare services are essential for a productive economy.

He urged the government to prioritize doctors’ welfare by increasing salaries and ensuring timely payment to curb the mass exodus of medical professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.

“The reason many Nigerian doctors and nurses leave immediately after their training is that their salaries in naira are far less than what hospital cleaners earn overseas,” he said.

“I appeal to the government to increase doctors’ salaries and ensure prompt payment.”

Babalola also urged the federal government to extend Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) support to private universities to enhance research and innovation in the country.

The Registrar of MDCN, Professor Fatima Kyari, congratulated the new doctors, urging them to uphold professionalism in their practice.

She warned that the council would take disciplinary action against any unprofessional conduct.

Kyari added that under the leadership of Health Minister Professor Ali Pate, the government is implementing measures to strengthen the health sector.

She announced plans to increase medical school admissions to address the personnel shortage.

ABUAD Vice-Chancellor, Professor Smaranda Olarinde, commended the university’s consistent excellence in medical education.
