Nigerian Navy commissions 30,000-litre solar-powered borehole in Igbokoda

By Tola Gbadamosi

In a move to strengthen civil-military relations, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Igbokoda, has today, Monday, 26 May 2025, commissioned a 30,000-litre solar-powered borehole at its Officers’ Mess complex in Ondo State.

The water project, a generous donation from the ADURO Foundation, forms part of events commemorating the Nigerian Navy’s 69th anniversary, currently being celebrated under the auspices of the Western Naval Command in Lagos.

Spearheaded by philanthropist and Ondo State indigene, Prince (Dr) Anthony Aduro, the project was built to address the severe potable water challenges the Base has faced since its establishment in 2005.

The area’s groundwater had been heavily contaminated, making access to clean water a persistent operational and welfare concern.

The newly inaugurated facility featured a specialised purification plant, ensuring the safe consumption of water by naval personnel.

The commissioning ceremony was graced by a representative of the Governor of Ondo State, traditional rulers, dignitaries, and other stakeholders.

In a show of civil-military partnership, an external six water outlet was also constructed, allowing the Igbokoda community to benefit from the project.

In her remarks, the Deputy Chairman of Ilaje Local Government area, Mrs Esejuwon Oluwaruntimi, who represented the governor, commended the ADURO Foundation and the Navy’s commitment to community development.

The Commanding Officer of FOB Igbokoda, Captain Aliyu Usman, in his welcome address, extended gratitude to the project’s benefactors and called on other well-meaning individuals and organisations to support security institutions with similar initiatives.

He assured that the Base will maintain the facility to ensure it continues to serve both naval personnel and the surrounding community.

The project marks a significant step in bridging infrastructural gaps while strengthening the relationship between the Navy and the people of Igbokoda.
