Nigerian-born Rio Ngumoha etched his name in Liverpool’s history books after making his professional debut in their Emirates FA Cup triumph against Accrington Stanley at Anfield. The 16-year-old forward, born in 2008, played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 4-0 victory, which secured their place in the competition’s fourth round.
Ngumoha delivered an impressive performance in the first half before being replaced by Jayden Danns in the 72nd minute. Goals from Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Chiesa, and Danns ensured a comprehensive win for the Reds.
Before his debut, Ngumoha had featured in the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League and was an unused substitute during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarterfinal match against Southampton.
Ngumoha’s decision to leave Chelsea for Liverpool in September 2024, rejecting a scholarship offer to join the Reds’ U18 squad, has proven a defining moment in his young career. At just 16 years and 135 days old, Ngumoha became the youngest player to represent Liverpool in the FA Cup, surpassing Trey Nyoni’s record.
Handed his debut by manager Arne Slot, Ngumoha’s rapid rise highlights his potential and determination to succeed at the highest level. As Liverpool fans celebrate this historic moment, all eyes are on the young striker as he embarks on what promises to be a bright footballing journey.
