Nightclub raid: EFCC takes responsibility, as Ondo lawmaker condemns actions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asserted its involvement in Saturday’s raid conducted on several nightclubs and lounges in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, during which several arrests were made.

The Commission’s spokesman, Mr. Dele Oyedele, said in a statement that it was a sting operation carried out after thorough intelligence gathering.

It was learned that about 50 persons were arrested during the raid on many lounges in the Alagbaka area of the state.

Mr. Oyedele also explained that the operation was carried out to round up some internet fraudsters holding a Yahoo party.

He affirmed that those arrested were in the agency’s custody in Ibadan and were undergoing profiling.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights and a member representing Ondo East/West Federal constituency, Dr. Abiola Makinde, has condemned the EFCC raid, describing it as disturbing and an invasion of privacy of innocent Nigerians.

The lawmaker claimed to have spoken with the head of the team who reportedly said the commission acted on orders from above and intelligence reports.

Dr. Makinde, however, urged those affected and the people of the state to remain calm while the matter was being investigated and resolved.
