NNPC robbery: Police begin investigation

The Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigations into the armed robbery attack which led to the killing of a night guard at the NNPC filling station in Akure on Sunday.

The victim, Moses was killed in the night as the hoodlums attempted to rob the filling station.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph who spoke with The Hope Metro disclosed that the command has directed detectives to commence investigations into the attack.

The Hope Metro gathered that gunmen suspected to be armed robbers  had stormed the station located at Shagari Village junction, Onyearugbulem area in the city about 1:30am and overpowered the deceased.

The hoodlums were said to have killed the 27- years-old after the station had shut down its operation for the day.

It was learnt that the guard was macheted on the head before he was shot dead, with one of his teeth removed by the robbers, while he was asleep .

Investigations revealed that the hoodlums forcefully gained entrance into the NNPC facility, breaking into the main offices of the gas station by destroying the burglary proof and some iron doors.

One of the fuel attendants at the station, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said the incident was very shocking to members of staff of the  station.

“We just came to work as usual this morning, only for us to see that some people have burgled our filling station by forcefully ganning entrance.

“We also noticed blood by the side of the station and saw the security guard (Moses) already dead. So, we quickly raised alarm.

“The robbers broke the office of the Manager and destroyed the place. During the process of looking for money, they ransacked everywhere in the office,’ he said.

A resident of the area who does not want his name in print, , said the hoodlums must have entered silently into the petrol station to carry out the criminal act.

He said, ”It was surprising for us to wake up this morning to find out that they robbed the NNPC filling station and killed one of the night guards on duty.

“None of us noticed that armed robbers were on operation .

“This is a sad incident. It is just unfortunate they sacrificed the young security guard and sent him to an early grave.

One of the supervisors of the NNPC gas station who refused to give her name told our correspondent that the case has already been reported to the police.

However, the remains of the guard had been moved to the Ondo State Teaching hospital morgue in Akure by policemen from the Homicide department of the Ondo State Police Command.
