NOA rallies Nigerians on tax reform, security, others

The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has called on Nigerians to support its initiatives aimed at addressing key national issues, including tax reform, security awareness, HIV/AIDS, the get-rich-quick syndrome, and human rights.

This was highlighted by the Director-General NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, at a press conference in Akure, signalling the flag-off for the nationwide sensitisation campaigns.

The event, themed “Promoting Awareness, Ethical Values, and National Development,” underscored the need for collective action to foster a more secure, informed, and ethical society.

On tax reform, Issa-Onilu, represented by NOA’s Director and Head of Health and Social Services, Dr Ayoola Olufemi, explained the government’s plan to simplify the tax system through four comprehensive bills: the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

He said the reform would eliminate multiple taxation, support low-income earners, and introduce transparent digital processes for tax collection.

The NOA Director-General added that the reform will prevent double taxation, offer relief to low-income earners, and ensure tax revenues are visibly used to improve public services like schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.

He assured citizens that a fair and efficient tax system will contribute to national development.

On security, the NOA Director-General highlighted the government’s dedication to improving Nigeria’s security architecture with better equipment, training, and funding for security agencies, as well as deploying technology for intelligence gathering and surveillance.

Issa-Onilu stressed the role of citizens in reporting suspicious activities, stressing that “Security begins with you and me.”

Issa-Onilu emphasised the significance of World HIV/AIDS Day, pointing out the government’s commitment to providing free and accessible HIV testing and counselling services nationwide.

He noted that efforts to ensure widespread availability of antiretroviral treatments are ongoing, alongside partnerships with international organisations to combat stigma and discrimination, urging citizens to take advantage of these services and adopt responsible health behaviours.

Addressing the pervasive issue of the get-rich-quick syndrome, Issa-Onilu noted the erosion of traditional values and the economic pressures that lead some individuals to unethical practices.

He referenced government programmes like the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) and various skill acquisition initiatives aimed at empowering youth and supporting small businesses.

He urged Nigerians to reject shortcuts to wealth and embrace integrity, hard work, and the opportunities provided through government initiatives to make life better for citizens

In recognition of World Human Rights Day, he highlighted efforts to strengthen legal frameworks addressing gender-based violence, child trafficking, and other human rights violations, calling on Nigerians to respect others’ rights and report any violations to appropriate authorities.

Also, the Ondo State NOA Director, Mr James Adekunle, solicited the support of journalists and the general public to support government’s initiative.

He stressed that these campaigns are not solely government-driven but require the active involvement of all Nigerians, calling on the media, traditional leaders, religious institutions, civil society organisations, and educational bodies to help disseminate these messages.
